Dr Brendan Nelson has been appointed to the position of Director of the Australian War Memorial. He takes over from Maj-Gen Steve Gower who served in the role for a formidable 16 years.

Dr Nelson has a deep appreciation of military history, which was enhanced by his posting as Australian Ambassador in Brussels, with responsibility for our relations with Belgium, Luxembourg, the European Union and NATO.

He said recently " I don't think there is any other group of Australians that has given more, or worked harder to shape our values and beliefs, than our armed services"

He insists that any future changes to the Memorial must not affect its essential character and charter as a shrine, a museum and a centre for education and research, - and one of the most popular tourist destinations
in Australia.
